Development Officer – Corporate, Foundation, Government and United Way


FLSA: Exempt

Department: Development

Primary Function:  The Development Officer – Corporate, Foundation, Government and United Way has lead responsibility for the planning and execution of corporate, foundation, United Way and Government fund development activities including prospect research, proposal development and submission, and monitoring and reporting related to funding secured.


Principal Accountabilities:

Support overall organization goals that result in the securing of total annual funding to the Chicago Urban League in excess of $8M.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Undertakes a strategic approach to aligning the Chicago Urban League’s key programs and initiatives to funding opportunities
  • Oversees implementation of Individual and institutional donor recognition and stewardship activity (e.g. Empower Newsletter, Partner Spotlights for CFGUW and individual donors, weekly funding partner thank you e-blasts)
  • Oversees the completion of extensive and ongoing prospect research (online, databases, clearinghouses, professional literature, and donor prospecting directories) of current and prospective corporate, foundation and United Way partners in an effort to collect data and identify viable funding opportunities
  • Completes all stages of funding proposal development including confirmation of project/program objectives, contact with the funding partner for clarification of guidelines, as well as development of letters of inquiry, online applications, and formal proposals with the appropriate organization approvals obtained
  • Forecasts annual, quarterly and monthly successful proposal submissions; reporting on funding partner renewal, acquisition, growth and increase in contributed revenues
  • Works with internal stakeholders in the development of agency fact sheets, outcomes statements, and program budgets to submit to identified funding partners; work with department heads and others to expedite funding proposal development
  • Proofreads and edits text for correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and concise and easy to understand language that effectively presents the council’s mission and communicates a compelling case for support
  • Monitors progress of funding proposals after submission to ensure that all required procedures and requirements are being met
  • Ensures the fulfillment of funding partner benefits (e.g. article in newsletter, acknowledgement in annual report)
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience with a demonstrated track record in authoring winning funding applications
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, Publisher)
  • SUPERIOR written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to present a positive image and communicate effectively via telephone and in person
  • Highly organized, strategic thinker, with proven ability to handle multiple tasks, handle pressure and meet deadlines
  • The ability to work well both independently, and within a team
  • Commitment to cultural sensitivity and respect for differences
